How Does Shoply AI Handle Currencies on Shopify?
Imagine a shopper in Austria asking Shoply AI Chat, “How much is this bag?” Your store’s saved price might be 1,000 SEK (Swedish kronor), while Shopify’s price for Austria is 89 EUR (euros). Shoply AI takes care to use both the correct amount and currency for the shopper’s country in chat and search. The shopper can compare products and see whether the bag fits their budget. They don’t have to convert currencies themselves.
Why can a shopper in Austria see a price in euros when the saved price is in Swedish kronor?
Shoply can save a product’s default price for search and request a different price for the shopper’s market—a country or group of countries you sell to.
For example:
- When collecting product information from your store, Shoply saves the product’s price in your store’s default currency, such as 1,000 SEK.
- A shopper browses with Austria selected as their country.
- When a pricing refresh is needed, Shoply asks Shopify for that product’s price for Austria.
- Shopify returns a price, such as 89 EUR. Shoply updates both the amount and currency in the product information used for the response.
Shopify calls this contextual pricing : pricing for a particular country. The country matters because markets using the same currency can still have different product prices.
What is the difference between Shopify’s base currency, local currencies, and cart currency?
| Value | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Market base currency | The currency customers in that market use when local currencies are disabled. | SEK |
| Local Currency Flag | An on/off market setting that allows Shopify to adjust currencies by customer region. | Enabled |
| Cart currency | The currency reported by the storefront for the current shopper’s cart. | EUR |
A market can have SEK as its base currency while an Austrian shopper sees EUR when local currencies are enabled. The base currency alone does not tell you which currency every shopper should see. See Shopify’s market currency settings .
How does Shoply know which country and currency to use?
Your storefront sends Shoply the selected country, language, cart currency, and page URL with the shopper’s request, when that information is available.
Shoply compares the page URL with the URLs saved for your markets. For example, suppose your saved market URLs are https://example.com/de-at for Austria in German and https://example.com/sv-se for Sweden in Swedish. A shopper viewing https://example.com/de-at/products/bag gives Shoply a URL to match to the Austrian market. These are example URLs; the match depends on your saved market settings.
If the storefront supplies the country and language directly, Shoply uses those values instead of the ones suggested by the URL. When the storefront supplies the cart currency, Shoply checks the returned currency against it.
Country determines the pricing requested from Shopify. Cart currency tells Shoply what currency to expect in the result. A currency code alone does not choose a country’s price.
Language serves a separate purpose: selecting translated product information. A shopper browsing in German could be shopping from Austria, Germany, or another country, so language alone cannot determine their currency.
